The reason and the purpose of the meeting

The meeting was organised in accordance with the revised project plan in order to harness the expertise and experience of the Dutch partners in the use of Virtual Learning Environments for supporting student teaching and learning and in assessment. The main goal of the meeting was to draw together experiences of work package 4, especially in relation to the trialling of the common module delivery and subsequent modifications of teaching materials.

Main results of the meeting

  1. The trial of the common modules was discussed in detail and presentation of data and findings were given by each of the participating partners. It emerged that the delivery of the common modules had been adapted to suit the institutional and organisational arrangements of each of the partners. Some partners had used the materials as a stand alone course without face to face teaching support, whereas others had integrated the common modules into a taught component within the course.
  2. All partner countries had made arrangements for students to be given credit for participating in the common modules and there is a wealth of data about VLE usage created by this stage of the project.
  3. Discussions of the educational affordances of the Blackboard environment were undertaken at this meeting, and it was decided that the common modules would be offered in the Moodle environment currently being implemented at Tampere Polytechnic. This would allow a larger cohort of international students to access the common modules, and the project team could gather data on the comparable performance of the VLEs in pedagogical terms and the ease of transporting material from one VLE to another. This information is to be used in reviewing the electronic learning strategies.
  4. Task division among partners was completed. The New University of Lisbon would like to contribute with "teachers' profile" to the study that will be prepared on "learning strategies" by the Dunaujvaros team. Struktura Ltd offered contribution to data analysis of the questionnaires for students participating in the programmes of common courses.
  5. Planning of the Crete conference and meeting was undertaken and a date of October 10th was set for this event. A discussion of the arrangements concerning the type and nature of dissemination activities was undertaken. Trials of video conferencing for the Crete event were also made.
  6. The other aims of the last meeting were outlined
    • feedback of project monitoring
    • review of project results
    • action plan for various dissemination forms
    • preparation for the final report (administrative and financial matters)
